A Horse Trade

I started trading horses before I could drive,
So I had to have a chauffer, to assure I would arrive.

My dadís friend Mr. Pickens was retired and had lots of time,
So he became my driver, a friend and confidant of mine.

I heard about a horse for sale, a pretty red dun filly,
The fellow said she's a real looker but she'll be a little silly.

I called Mr. Pickens and asked if he could go,
He said heíd be over in twenty minutes or so.

She was a pretty pony, all four legs were straight,
Baby doll head, big soft eye and carrying the right weight.

For a hundred and forty dollars, I owned her red dun hide,
And as we started to the truck, I said let's see if she will ride.

When my foot hit the stirrup, that pony left the ground,
I managed to get a seat, while pulling her head around.

She bucked across the yard, and out onto a gravel road,
I was hanging on for dear life, just trying not to get throwed.

One second I saw gravel, the next I'd see sky,
I never road a pony that could jump and buck so high.

Suddenly she stopped bucking as quickly as she'd begun,
And we stood there panting and sweating in that hot July sun.

As if nothing happened, we road back to the truck,
Mr. Pickens said that was quite a bronc ride, that horse can really buck.

I said she bout lost me when she jumped that water trough,
But when she hit them gravels, wern't no bronc ride, I's too scared to get off.
